Travel guide
What to know before Raja Ampat, step by step
Raja Ampat is remote and costs more than most of Indonesia, but it is not hard to plan. Follow these steps and you will know what to prepare, when, and roughly what it costs.
Good to know
We update this guide regularly, but rules, timetables and fees can change. We only link to official sources we have checked.
Planning
Get to know village homestays
Most places to stay in Raja Ampat are simple homestays run by Papuan families, on the beach or over the water, with three meals a day. Power often runs only in the evening and fresh water is limited. Read what we check at every homestay first.
How DAMPIER worksWork out your budget
Prices in Southwest Papua are higher than elsewhere in Indonesia, sea transport most of all. Build your trip day by day in the Planner to see homestay, trip, boat and levy costs before you go.
Open the PlannerChoose when to go
October to April usually brings the calmest seas and the clearest water. From June to September southern winds can make crossings rough, especially towards the south. See the latest conditions from our team on the ground.
Latest conditionsPick your islands
Areas near Waisai such as Kri, Mansuar, Arborek and Gam are the easiest to reach, and Piaynemo makes a half-day trip. Misool is far and needs a full day by boat. Choose two or three areas so your time is not spent at sea.
Explore the optionsChoose your stay, trips and guides
Filter by type of service, then open the details to see prices, facilities and photos. If you need a specialist guide, for birdwatching for example, add it to the note in your request.
See all servicesIf you dive, put safety first
Dive with a certified dive centre, bring your certification card, and make sure your travel insurance covers diving. Currents in Raja Ampat can be strong. Leave at least 24 hours between your last dive and your flight.
Plan your boats carefully
Chartering a boat is expensive, and it is priced per boat, not per person. Plan your route in order without doubling back, and find people to share a boat so the cost is split.
Share a boat boardCheck availability, then book
Ask first with the Check availability button on each service, and our team replies within 24 hours. Once it suits you, tap Pay now and pay in full. For homestays and resorts, choose the Standard, Reschedulable or Flexible rate. If the owner turns out to be unavailable, we offer another place or other dates, and if nothing suits you, you get 100% of your money back.
How booking works
Getting ready
Sort out your visa or ID
Citizens of many countries can apply for a visit visa online before they travel through the official Indonesian Immigration website, including extensions. Check the rules for your country there. Indonesian nationals just need their ID card.
Official Immigration e-Visa site, opens another websiteGet a check-up and pack medicine
Have a medical and dental check before you leave, as health care on the islands is limited. Bring your own medicine, seasickness tablets and reef-safe sunscreen. Ask your doctor about malaria prevention.
Bring rupiah in cash
Withdraw or change enough rupiah before you cross. The villages have no ATMs and do not take cards, so bring cash for extra meals, boats and souvenirs.
Get a local SIM card
Telkomsel has the widest coverage in Raja Ampat. Buy a card in Sorong or at the airport, and download maps and important documents before you cross, because on many islands there is signal only in certain spots.
Fly to Sorong, then take the fast ferry to Waisai
Flights to Sorong (SOQ) usually connect through Jakarta, Makassar or Manado. From Sorong harbour the fast ferry to Waisai takes about two hours. Times can change on holidays or in bad weather, so check the day before.
Arriving in Raja Ampat
Register and pay the tourism levy online
Every visitor must register on SIPARI Raja Ampat, the local government's official site, before entering Raja Ampat, and pay the tourism levy there. Foreign visitors pay IDR 1,000,000 (≈ €50) per person and Indonesian citizens IDR 300,000. Children under 12 are free. Payment is cashless, by card, bank transfer or e-wallet, and is not made through DAMPIER. You receive an e-ticket with a QR code by email. Keep it on your phone, because officers check it at tourist sites. Without it you can be turned away or fined on the spot.
Register on SIPARI, opens another websiteRespect local customs and nature
Dress modestly in the villages, ask before photographing people, and follow sasi rules when an area is closed. Do not touch or stand on coral, and take your rubbish home with you.
Our community programmesEnjoy it, then tell people
Slow down, this is island time. Back home, tell your friends about your trip and send us your feedback. Village-run tourism with responsible visitors is the best way to protect Raja Ampat.
Why DAMPIER?
Certainty before you board the boat
Raja Ampat is far away, and expensive to get wrong. This is what we do so that what you see on screen is what you get on the island.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
If your answer isn't here, ask on WhatsApp. Our team is in Waisai.
Is the listed price the final price?
Yes. The platform contribution is already in the listed price, not added on top. Only boats and the tourism levy, which you pay online to the local government, are listed separately, and you can cost both in the Planner.
How do I book?
Pick a listing, tap Pay now, fill in your name and WhatsApp number, then pay in full through Midtrans. For homestays and resorts, first choose the rate, Standard, Reschedulable or Flexible. Once the payment is in, the request goes to the partner, and if the partner hasn't answered within 2 hours during working hours, DAMPIER ops call. If the partner can't take it, we offer another place or other dates, and if nothing suits you, you get 100% of your money back. Want to ask first? The Check availability button opens WhatsApp with the DAMPIER team.
What are the Sasi Standard and the Verified badge?
Sasi means promise in the village language. The Sasi Standard has four points. The listed price is the price you pay. An availability answer in less than 12 hours. Clean water, bathroom, mosquito net, electricity and internet as written. Life jackets for every passenger, and we encourage boats and guides to get licensed. Our team checks them during the visit. The Verified badge lasts 12 months. If a complaint turns out to be true, the partner gets 6 months to fix it, and if they can't, the Verified badge is suspended and then withdrawn.
What is the tourism levy, and how much is it?
Raja Ampat Regency charges every visitor a tourism levy under Regent Regulation 34 of 2025. Foreign visitors pay IDR 1,000,000 (≈ €50) per person and Indonesian citizens IDR 300,000. Children under 12 are free. Register and pay online at sipari-rajaampat.id before you arrive, by card, bank transfer or e-wallet, then keep the QR e-ticket on your phone. The levy goes to the local government, not through DAMPIER, and part of it funds sea patrols, reef rehabilitation, waste management and tourist spots in the villages.
What if the weather turns and the boat is cancelled?
Partners cancel sea trips when the swell is high. Each listing states its limit. If a boat is cancelled because of weather, you get a full refund.
Is there electricity, fresh water and signal at the homestay?
It differs from village to village, and we don't gloss over it. Every listing records its facilities, such as 24-hour or night-only electricity, the bathroom, signal, and internet, exactly as checked by our team on the visit.
How do I get to Raja Ampat?
Fly to Sorong, take the fast ferry to Waisai (about 2 hours), then a village boat to your homestay or trip start. Ferry times and fares are in the step-by-step guide above, and the Planner puts the ferry and boats on your days. Times can change on holidays or in bad weather, so check with us the day before.
When is the best time to come?
From October to April the sea is usually calmest and the water clearest. December to March gives the best chance of seeing manta rays. From June to August the southeast wind brings bigger waves, so sea trips are postponed more often, but the villages are quieter.
Do I need to bring cash?
Yes. There are no ATMs in the villages, and cashless payment rarely works. Bring enough from Sorong or Waisai for the balance you pay on arrival and for small expenses.
I own a homestay or a boat. How do I become a partner?
Sign up via How it works in the menu, under For partners. All it takes is your business name and WhatsApp number, no laptop needed. Our team gets in touch, schedules a visit, takes photos and records prices. Your listing goes live with the Verified badge.
